How can new mothers regain their self-confidence and build their self-esteem?

Many new mothers want to improve their appearance and regain their sense of well-being, but they often hesitate to take the first step. Māris Krūmiņš, a plastic surgeon at the Latvian Microsurgery Center, explains how modern aesthetic and reconstructive surgery can help restore harmony, minimize the changes caused by childbirth, and regain confidence in themselves and their bodies.

Step 1 – Consultation

Plastic surgeon In his practice, Māris Krūmiņš has observed that among mothers, cosmetic surgeries are most commonly performed on the breasts, abdomen, and eyelids. Regardless of the type of cosmetic surgery a woman wishes to undergo, the first step is to make an appointment with plastic surgeon. Women do not need to prepare in any special way—the main thing is to be clear about their wishes and the expected outcome. During the consultation, the doctor explains all possible options, risks, the recovery process, and the benefits. Additional tests are ordered as needed.

Breast Augmentation

The birth of a child is one of the most beautiful and significant events that brings about changes—both emotional and physical. «One of the areas of the body where changes after pregnancy and breastfeeding are often most pronounced is the breasts. During pregnancy, a woman’s breasts can enlarge significantly as they prepare for lactation. However, after breastfeeding ends, they often lose their shape and volume, and many women wish to restore their breasts to the appearance they had before pregnancy. Today’s plastic surgery »offers various ways to achieve this," explains plastic surgeon Māris Krūmiņš emphasizes that a woman should not have to make the decision about which of the proposed surgical options to choose on her own. «During the consultation, taking into account the woman’s wishes and body type, plastic surgeon »They will recommend the most appropriate technique. Computer-generated visualizations are often used so that the woman can see in advance what the result might look like."

Breast Implants

If your breasts have lost volume after breastfeeding but there is no significant sagging, breast augmentation with implants may be a good solution. This method restores the shape and volume of the breasts and is particularly suitable when a significant increase in breast size is desired.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

If a woman is satisfied with her breast size but her breasts have sagged and lost their shape, she may opt for a breast lift.

This procedure does not involve the use of implants—the breasts are lifted and reshaped to give them a more youthful and aesthetically pleasing appearance. This method can also be combined with implant placement if both breast augmentation and a breast lift are needed.

Fat Grafting

Breast augmentation using a woman’s own tissue—most commonly fat—is becoming increasingly popular. «This method is suitable for women who do not want to use implants for breast augmentation but still wish to improve the shape and volume of their breasts. It’s important to know that fat transfer requires a sufficient amount of fat tissue—sometimes this option may not be suitable for very slim women. The advantage of fat transfer is a natural-looking result, and an added benefit is liposuction—the removal of fat from areas where it is excess, such as the abdomen, hips, or thighs. However, it’s important to note that not all of the transplanted fat survives. Twenty to thirty percent of it may not take, and in some cases, a repeat procedure is necessary. Furthermore, this method cannot provide as much volume increase as implants,» explains plastic surgeon.

You can start thinking about and deciding on breast correction surgery at least six months after you stop breastfeeding, once a new mother’s body has fully recovered from pregnancy and breastfeeding. «The good news is that neither a breast lift, nor breast implants, nor fat grafting affects a woman’s ability to breastfeed in the future. The only procedure not recommended for women who are still planning to have children is breast reduction,» emphasizes Māris Krūmiņš.

Tummy Tuck

Sagging skin, muscle laxity, and stretch marks—these are common concerns that new mothers bring to specialists after pregnancy. Modern cosmetic surgery offers solutions—tummy tuck surgery, or abdominoplasty, which can help restore a smooth and firm abdominal area, and liposuction.

«During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles and skin stretch significantly to accommodate the growing baby. After childbirth, these tissues are not always able to fully return to their previous state. Many women experience diastasis—the separation of the rectus abdominis muscles—which causes a bulge in the front of the abdomen. The skin becomes loose, stretch marks appear, and sometimes an abdominal overhang—or excess skin folds in the lower abdomen—also forms. These changes cannot always be reversed through physical activity or diet alone. It is precisely in these cases that plastic surgery,», explains Māris Krūmiņš.

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure during which excess skin and fat tissue are removed, and the separated abdominal muscles are tightened and sutured. The result is a flatter, firmer, and more aesthetically pleasing abdomen.

During liposuction, the layer of fat in the abdominal area is reduced, a waistline is created, and the transition between the abdomen, flanks, and hips is improved. «This procedure can be particularly helpful for those with localized fat deposits—despite exercise or dieting. Liposuction can be performed as a standalone procedure (if there is no significant skin laxity) or in combination with a tummy tuck,» explains plastic surgeon, emphasizing that this type of surgery is recommended no sooner than six months after breastfeeding has ended and a stable weight has been achieved. «If another pregnancy is planned in the near future, it is better to postpone the surgery, as a new pregnancy can stretch the tissues again and reduce the effectiveness of the procedure. It is important to note that this surgery is not intended for weight loss, but rather to improve body contours after weight has stabilized.»

Eyelids Up

Over the years or following major life changes—such as pregnancy, periods of sleep deprivation, or weight fluctuations—many people notice changes in the eye area. The eyelids become heavier, the skin sags, pronounced wrinkles appear, or even a narrowing of the field of vision may occur. «In such cases, we can offer eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, as a solution. In both upper and lower eyelid surgeries, we very often consider fat grafting as an additional procedure to achieve a more natural and effective result,» explains plastic surgeon Māris Krūmiņš points out that women choose eyelid surgery not only for aesthetic reasons, as it improves both their appearance and how they feel, and even their vision. Common reasons why women seek out a specialist:

– drooping upper eyelids, which make the eyes look heavy or even tired;
- lower eyelids with pronounced bags or swelling, which create a puffy appearance;
– wrinkles or excess skin around the eyes that make it difficult to apply makeup;
– visual disturbances caused by heavy eyelids obstructing the field of vision.

During upper eyelid surgery, excess skin that hangs over the eyes, creates a feeling of heaviness, or even impairs vision is removed. By making a small incision in the natural crease of the eyelid, excess skin is removed and, if necessary, fat pads are also removed.

During lower eyelid correction, bags or puffiness are removed.

Recovery After Breast Augmentation Surgery

Regardless of the method chosen, the recovery period following breast correction surgery is 4–6 months.

After fat grafting: the breasts are immobilized for the first week; minor bruising may occur, but the final result is visible after just two months.

After implant placement or a breast lift: you may experience increased discomfort and sensitivity during the first few weeks; you should rest for about a month, and the shape of your breasts will stabilize within 2–3 months.

Recovery After Tummy Tuck Surgery

After the surgery, you must wear a special compression corset for several weeks.

– You may experience some pain during the first few days and should rest. Within 2–3 weeks, you can resume light daily activities.
– After six weeks, most patients return to their normal daily routine, but full recovery can take 3–6 months.
– The scar is usually hidden beneath the underwear line and becomes less noticeable over time.

Recovery After Eyelid Surgery

Generally, you should take it easy for 5–7 days after eyelid surgery.

The bruises and swelling will gradually subside over the course of 1–2 weeks.

– The stitches are removed on the 5th–7th day after surgery.
– The final result can be assessed after 1–2 months, once the tissue has fully healed.
