LMC doctors restore facial function to a Ukrainian lieutenant colonel

A segment on the Latvian Television program “Aculiecinieks” featured Ukrainian Lieutenant Colonel Serhiy Shpanko, who, thanks to the doctors at the Latvian Microsurgery Center, has now regained his smile, which he had lost after suffering severe injuries on the battlefield.

The team at the Latvian Microsurgery Center performed a complex, seven-hour surgery to restore facial function and significantly improve the patient’s quality of life. Dr. Uldis Krustiņš, MD, director of the LMC; Dr. Jānis Zariņš, MD, a plastic surgeon; and plastic surgery residents discuss this surgery and its significance.
